Mykyta Gibalenko was born in 1993 in Melitopol, Ukraine, and raised in Kyiv. His interest for art and visual media began during his school years, when he started documenting jam sessions and street performances by musician friends. These early visual experiences, often filmed at night in the vibrant underground scenes of the Ukrainian capital, had a lasting influence on Mykyta’s artistic language. Coming from a family with a technical background, Mykyta pursued mechanical engineering at the National Technical University of Ukraine (KPI) in Kyiv, while continuing to explore film and attending acting courses in his spare time. In 2013, Mykyta moved to Munich, Germany, to further his engineering studies at the Technical University of Munich. During this period, he also started collaborating with the Munich independent theater scene on various video projects such as trailers, video installations and created his first documentary work SINNSPAGAT (2016). After graduating and spending two years working as an engineer in the renewable energy sector, Mykyta decided to fully commit to filmmaking. He independently produced and directed several short fiction films and started 2019 his directing studies at the University of Television and Film in Munich. Since the beginning of Russian full-scale invasion on Ukraine in 2022, Mykyta has focused his work on migration and the identity of Ukrainians living abroad. This thematic direction is reflected in NEBO TA ZEMLYA (2022), I SEE THEM BLOOM (2023), and CAMOUFLAGE (2026). CAMOUFLAGE is Mykyta’s graduation film and his first feature-length work.
