Engineer Viktor Eisenhauer and his wife Larissa both work in the construction department of a pump factory. When Larissa is promoted to be Viktors supervisor, he tries to regain his position as -the- head of the family. In his power struggle, he slips deeper and deeper into a downward spiral of humiliation, until in the end, he turns to his last resort- violence.
